Together with Projection Artworks we created a virtual reality journey that transports British Airways’ European customers to some of the most attractive places in the USA. The project was showcased in the streets of Milan, Frankfurt and Paris via the Oculus Rift, a head mounted display (HMD) and drew lots of attention.
Nicole Scherzinger, former Pussycat Dolls lead singer, multi-platinum selling solo artist and X Factor judge, helped BA to launch the innovation. “As a frequent traveller, this new technology is super exciting,” she said. “Being able to step into a destination before I actually get there is sch-amazing!”
The objective for the project was that the experiences should display the feel and look of a particular British Airways destination. The quintessential California beach scene was created by skating along the Venice Beach boardwalk with the Freedom360 camera setup. For the Texas adventure the 360º video camera was rigged on a mechanical bull and the VR experience puts you on a bucking bronco. Choosing one particular location over another in New York City will always lead to some dissent. However, to stay with the overall theme for the projects – things a visitor would be able to do if they were to visit – ice skating in Bryant Park with the backdrop of the beautiful New York Public library was selected for the VR experience.
