Experience for Gear VR

Client: CNBC, Jay Leno’s Garage & Brightspot Creative

What’s better than watching Jay Leno’s Garage on TV? How about riding along with Jay in one of his famous cars?

Thanks to virtual reality (and YouTube 360) anyone can now experience sitting next to Jay Leno in his Tank car while he is driving through the streets of Los Angeles, CA.

“This is really cool technology.”

Jay Leno about VR

Koncept VR was commissioned by CNBC & Brightspot Creative to create this ride-along VR experience to serve as a companion piece to Jay’s new primetime show on NBC.

While rigging any camera on a car poses several challenges, the Tank Car was no exception with its custom-made rounded aluminium body. Joergen Geerds and Aleksandr Chechelnitsky from Koncept VR came up with some nifty solutions to put the camera right beside Jay Leno. This puts the viewer right into the passenger seat of a car with a M47 Patton tank engine under the hood and a comedian as driver.

The Koncept VR team enjoyed being around ‘the man’ for a day and introduced him to VR via the Oculus powered Gear VR headset from Samsung. Listening to Jay telling stories the way only he can – “well, oculus rift is one of my favorite bands” – Jay Leno kept the whole production team smiling and laughing throughout the day.

Using the Samsung Gear VR Headset the attendees of the Televisions Critics Association Summer Press Tour were the first to experience riding shotgun with Jay Leno. Now you can join Jay on a ride with his Tank Car, too. Go, check it out!
